Creating Invitations to Play: A fun guide for parents and educators

Creating Invitations to Play: A fun guide for parents and educators

Kids learn best when they’re having fun. An invitation to play is a space full of possibilities, and this kind of play can help them solve problems, think critically, and interact with others.

Invitations to play are simply a few objects or toys set up in a way that get kids curious and creative. Instead of giving them a game with rules or a goal, you set up a few key things and let them explore however they want. This also helps them become more independent as they are choosing how to play with the materials by themselves.

How to create awesome invitations to play:

  • Keep it simple: Less is more! Pick a few key items that can be used in different ways. You could pair a couple of their favourite things with some things they hardly use.
  • Use everyday stuff: Blocks, fabric, and natural items like leaves or stones are simple building blocks for imagination. The goal is to use things that spark creativity and exploration.
  • Follow your child’s interests: Notice what your child is into right now—animals, colours, building—and tailor the setup to match their interests.
  • Add educational tools: Learning tools can really enhance the play experience - flashcards, puzzles, and games are perfect for adding to your invitation to play. For example, you can use some animal flashcards with little animal toys and natural things like leaves, sticks and pebbles to create a nature-themed play area.
  • Make the space inviting: The play area should be welcoming with materials neatly arranged and easy to reach.
  • Incorporate novelty: New environments are stimulating to our brains and conducive to learning, so simply setting up some familiar items somewhere unfamiliar will likely interest your child. For example setting up a playdough picnic under the kitchen table, or a doll play scene in a shelf of the pantry.

Fun ideas for invitations to play:

  • Nature exploration: Use our animal flashcards with rocks, leaves, and pinecones to create a mini nature reserve. Let your child match the cards to what they find, and watch them fall in love with nature and animals.
  • Colour sorting: Set up a colour-sorting station with coloured blocks, fabrics, or even food items. You can also use flashcards or printouts to add an extra educational element.
  • Storytelling corner: Create a cozy spot with some stuffed animals or dolls. Let your child make up stories based on the cards, harnessing their imagination and language skills.

Invitations to play are a simple but powerful way to spark creativity, independence, and learning in young children. With the right materials and a little creativity, you can make playtime fun and educational.
